Functional Illiteracy in English-Speaking Adults

Literacy Connections’ Adult Literacy program addresses the urgent need to support adults who read below a 6th-grade level. In New York State alone, 3.4 million adults struggle with functional illiteracy, which can limit their ability to find employment, manage healthcare, and support their families.

Through one-on-one and small group tutoring, our program provides these learners with personalized instruction tailored to their goals, whether it’s reading a prescription, filling out a job application, or pursuing further education. By improving literacy skills, participants gain confidence, independence, and the tools to overcome barriers in their daily lives.

Each year, our trained volunteers make a profound impact by helping Basic Readers transform their futures—one word at a time.

English Language Learners (ELL)

New Speakers of English

In a state where 30% of households speak a language other than English, the demand for English language instruction has never been greater. Literacy Connections offers a supportive environment for adults who want to improve their English proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

Our small group classes create an engaging and welcoming space where learners practice conversational skills while learning the English language, share experiences, and gain confidence. For those needing focused instruction, we pair students with a dedicated tutor for one-on-one sessions. From professionals with advanced degrees in their native language to those with minimal formal education, our program meets students where they are and helps them thrive.

ELL learners often face challenges in navigating daily life, whether applying for jobs, interacting with their children’s schools, or participating in their communities. By breaking down language barriers, our program opens doors to career opportunities, community involvement, and personal growth.

Why Adult Literacy Matters

Literacy transforms lives and strengthens communities. Adults with strong literacy skills are more likely to earn higher incomes, secure stable jobs, and raise families that value education. Improved literacy also contributes to healthier communities, as individuals with higher literacy levels can better manage their health, participate in civic life, and reduce dependence on public assistance.

By addressing these critical gaps, Literacy Connections is creating a ripple effect of positive change. Whether it’s helping a Basic Reader read their first book or empowering an ELL learner to communicate confidently at work, we’re not just teaching skills—we’re transforming futures.
