How We Do It
Literacy Connections of the Hudson Valley is a volunteer-based organization. Volunteers are the backbone of Literacy Connections and without volunteers, we cannot accomplish our mission. We actively recruit and train volunteers to provide one-on-one or small group tutoring in basic literacy or English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).
Volunteers are required to attend an initial orientation to give them an overview of the organization and student population. Volunteers who wish to become tutors are then scheduled to complete the tutor training workshop. Becoming a literacy tutor is now easier than ever! Volunteers can now complete the tutor training online in the comfort of their own homes.
Volunteers are also needed for our Book Buddies program. Volunteers are recruited, trained and matched to read one-on-one with children in one of our participating schools in Dutchess and Orange County. Volunteers may also choose to read to a small group of young children or help children with math.
Other volunteer opportunities are available in office administration, special events and fundraising.
